Arsenal entered the match as cup holders. Southampton were making their 4th appearance in the FA Cup Final. A Robert Pires goal earned Arsenal victory thus becoming the first team to defend the FA Cup since Tottenham Hotspur in 1982. Though Southampton were defeated they were handed a UEFA Cup slot by virtue that Arsenal had finished in a European place through their league position.
